Width, slope and the details people notice later
A single-file path can be 36 inches. A front walk where two people should pass comfortably wants 48 to 60. We mark the layout in paint first, because a walk that looks generous on a plan often feels tight once the shrubs grow in.
Cross slope stays gentle — around 2% — enough to shed water without feeling tilted underfoot. Where a walk meets a driveway or a public sidewalk we tool a clean expansion joint so the two slabs move independently instead of spalling at the seam.
Replacing city sidewalk and trip hazards
In most Snohomish County jurisdictions the sidewalk fronting a property is the owner’s maintenance responsibility, and raised panels caused by tree roots are the most common citation homeowners receive. We cut out and replace full panels, address the root cause where we can, and pour to the city’s thickness and finish requirements.
If a permit or an inspection is required we tell you before we start and handle the coordination so you are not the one calling the public works counter.
Small job, same standards
A 60-foot walkway gets the same base prep as a driveway: strip the sod, compact crushed rock, set forms to grade, add mesh or fiber reinforcement, and cut joints at regular spacing. Skipping base prep on small work is why so many walks look like a jigsaw puzzle after five winters.
Most walkways are a one to two day job, and we clean up the site the same day the forms come off.
